The Importance of a Mental Health Crisis Plan

A mental health emergency is a situation that endangers the health or well being of an individual or others. A mental health crisis can happen to anyone at any given time. Most families prepare for natural disasters, medical emergencies, and finical emergencies, yet many do not plan or even think about mental health emergencies.

Mental health emergencies are mostly classified as the individual becoming suicidal or unable to live normally after a nervous break down. This can develop after a spell of depression or more suddenly, like after a death of a loved one. It is almost always caused by a period of extreme stress, whether it be caused by work, financial situations, or even other people. During this phase, the individual can become uncontrollable and endanger the safety of others.

The best way to prepare for a mental health crisis situation is by knowing the resources. A person should research their local area to find crisis lines and outreach centers, know their rights and be able to identify a crisis situation when it occurs. However, if an individual is unsure about a situation and a life could be in danger, they should call their local emergency number.

Families need to be aware of the existence of mental crises and understand the importance of preparing for them just as any other emergency situation. With basic knowledge about what to do in a mental health emergency situation, a family can be prepared and perhaps save the life of an individual.
