More attention is being paid to providing types of housing for the mentally challenged than ever before. The Department of Housing and Urban Development regulates loans given for the purpose of creating housing for the mentally challenge.
There are several types of housing for the mentally challenged. Many are housed in institutions, where they do not necessarily belong. This is because their functionality is high enough to live with others in a non-institutional setting. In some housing developments, mentally challenged adults live in one-bedroom units at substantially discounted rents. There is such a place in Kansas, with mental health facilities on the grounds for the convenience of the residents.
California is well known for its one per cent tax on millionaires, which has been used to provide many types of homes for mentally challenged adults. There are group homes and apartments with one to four occupants. They not only provide a home, but they provide health services, help with housekeeping, and financial aid.
There are also day care facilities that offer many advantages for the mentally challenged. They have recreational field trips, nutritious meals, a clean environment, accredited medical staff, and helpful arts and crafts group therapy. One of these places is the Love and Joy Personal Care Home, in Houston, Texas, which has six locations. One of its locations is actually a licensed residential facility, housing twenty-six occupants. These Day Care and residential facilities also help the homeless, which is of great service to the community.
Mentally challenged adults would prefer to be regarded as productive individuals in society. Living in situations that give them a sense of independence is key to their sense of pride.
