There is not too much housing for mentally challenged people due to lack of funding. However, the McKinney Loan Program is one of a few programs that will help to fund this type of housing project. Social stigmas are one of the factors which contributes to the difficulties when submitting proposed housing plans for the mentally disabled. These plans are governed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Different states have different pricing for rent of these facilities. For example, Holiday Place in south Kansas City charges only 30 percent of regular rent for a one-bedroom unit. There are about 30 units for mentally disabled people, with mental health services located in the same building.
Founded in 1948 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the City of Newburyport, Newburport Housing Authority provides affordable housing for mentally disturbed elderly and low income family.
There is a big movement in California for housing development for mentally challenged people. For example in Ventura County, a one percent state tax charged to millionaires will be able to fund constructions of many facilities for these people. This type of support housing is more favorable than group homes in that it offers independence for the disabled individuals. Each person can feel much more comfortable to be accepted as part of the society, and not feel like a burden. There are plans to expand more housing developments.
As there are more housing projects organized by non-profit organizations across the nation, we will surely see an increase in this type of housing in the next few decades to come.
